Wainwright is a small town in Alberta , Canada . It is located about 200 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Edmonton . The Canadian Forces Base Wainwright , a base for the Canadian armed forces, is located southwest of the city. There are six schools in Wainwright, including a Francophone school and an adult education institute.
history
The city of Denwood had to give way to the route of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway , but was rebuilt three miles northwest and received its current name after the second Vice President of the GTPR, William Wainwright. Railway traffic still plays a major role in Wainwright today, the city is on the main line of the Canadian National Railway .
From 1909 to 1939 Wainwright was the Buffalo National Park , a sanctuary for the prairie bison . The park was dissolved in 1939 and converted into an army training area in 1940, now the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.

In 2006 the city, located at an altitude of 675 m, had 5,426 inhabitants, who were spread over 2,310 households. With an area of 8.55 km², there is a population density of 634.6 inhabitants per square kilometer.
