history
On April 29, 1881, the passenger steamer Tararua ran aground on the Otara Reef , which reached a good 2 km into the sea, off the coast of Waipapa Point and sank. 131 passengers were killed in what is considered to be the worst disaster in New Zealand civil shipping. Many of the victims were buried 1.5 km east of the location of today's lighthouse. The place is known as Tararua Acre .
As a result of this accident, the Waipapa Point Lighthouse was built on the Cape in 1884 . The lighthouse, which is considered to be one of the last wooden lighthouses in New Zealand still in operation, was automated in 1975 and converted to solar energy in 1988.
