The Wairoa River is a river in the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island of New Zealand.
geography
The 14 km long river flows northwards near the Tauranga district of Bethlehem into the natural harbor of Tauranga Harbor . It is fed by several source rivers that arise in the Kaimai Range .
Name meaning
There are five other rivers in New Zealand that have the same name, see: Wairoa River . In the Maori language , Wairoa means long water .
use
On the Wairoa River and its headwaters, there are several dams with hydropower plants that are used to generate electricity for the region.
Kayaking is popular in the quieter parts of the river . The rafting is from the McLaren Falls with rapids of grades 3 to 5 are practiced. The river is one of the top ten most popular rivers for rafting and kayaking.
