Coordinates: 35 ° 8 '  S , 143 ° 58'  O Wakool Shire was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 7,520 km² and last had about 4,000 inhabitants. In 2016 it went up in the Murray River Council .

Wakool was on the state's southwestern border with Victoria north of the Murray River about 630 km west of the Australian capital Canberra , 375 km north of Melbourne and 580 km east of Adelaide . The area comprises 54 hamlets and villages, including Burraboi, Cobramunga, Cunninyeuk, Dhuragoon, Dilpurra, Gonn, Goodnight, Jimaringle, Keri Keri, Koraleigh, Mallan, Mellool, Moolpa, Nacurrie, Niemur, Noorong, Perekerten, Stony Crossing, Tooleybuc, Tooranie , Tueloga, Tullakool, Wakool, Wetuppa and Yanga as well as parts of Kyalite and Moulamein. The headquarters of the Shire Council was in the village of Moulamein in the center of the LGA, where around 300 people now live.

The first telephone connection in Australia was set up at Yanga Station on the western border near Balranald. James Cromyn, nephew of the inventor Alexander Graham Bell , established the means of communication between the farm building and the shearers' accommodation.

The Wakool Shire Council had six members elected by residents of the three wards (two each from wards A, B, and C). These three districts were defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
