location

1958 flood
2011 flood

The flood bridge is located west of the Bernburg valley town at the western end of the Breite Straße between Bernburger Neustadt and Waldau and spans the Röse , an old arm of the Saale, which formed the main arm of the river from early history to the late Middle Ages. The Saale originally meandered very strongly in the lower reaches because of the small slope. With every major flood, the Saale finds its way back into its old bed, so that this bridge still has an important function for connecting the valley town with the road to Magdeburg if necessary. During the floods in 2013 , large parts of the valley town, including the Neustädter Nikolaikirche, were under water; the Waldau flood bridge was the last safe connection out of the valley town.

Architecture and history

The bridge is made of natural stone and spans an old arm of the Saale , which today no longer carries water at normal water levels, but serves as a flood bed for the Saale during high tide. The trade route from Magdeburg to Halle (Saale) already ran at this point in the Middle Ages . In the 16th century there was a bridge at the current location. The current bridge was built in 1786/1787, with parts of older predecessor buildings being included. Six pointed arches were created. Massive ramps lead to the bridge from both banks. In 1946 and 1973, as well as in the period from 1999 onwards, major repairs were carried out.

On the bridge ramp on the Neustadt side, two historical coats of arms are embedded, which were originally located on the bridge portal of the Bernburg city fortifications , which no longer exists .

The bridge is registered as a monument in the monument register for the city of Bernburg under registration number 094 60064 . The bridge is considered the most important historical natural stone bridge in Saxony-Anhalt.
