The forest railway Bieszczady ( Polish Bieszczadzka Kolejka Leśna) is a 21 km long museum railway with a gauge of 750 mm in the low mountain range Bieszczady [ bʲɛ'ʃtʃadɨ ] of the Carpathian foothills in southeastern Poland .

history

construction

The construction of the narrow-gauge railway line from Cisna to Nowy Łupków on the Stryj – Łupków railway line began in 1890. With the railway constructed by the Polish engineer Albin Zazula, the forests were opened up to use the wood deposits there. Most of the work in building the railway line was done by hand without any technical equipment.

The main route ran through the valley of the Solinka River . Stonemasons from Italy were hired for the construction of bridges, culverts and retaining walls, some of whom stayed in the area along the forest railway even after the construction work was completed. B. the Meinardich family. On January 22, 1898, the first section from Nowy Łupków to Cisna was opened. The sawmills built along the route resulted in an economic boom in the region. In the years from 1900 to 1909 the railway line was extended by 20 km from Cisna to Kalnica and Beskid ( Smerek ) due to the increased demand for wood .

During the First World War , the route was damaged and bridges were blown up. After the withdrawal of the Russian army in 1916, the line was rebuilt and, after Poland regained independence in 1918, belonged to the Polish State Railways .

During the Second World War , the line was destroyed again in 1944/1945. After the war it was taken over by the State Forests and rebuilt. In the early 1950s the nominal track width was reduced from 760 mm to 750 mm and in the 1960s it was extended to a length of 75 km. Passenger traffic began in 1963 and continued until November 30, 1994, when train traffic ceased entirely. Until then, the railway company had employed around 300 people.

After the acquisition of the railway company by the Bieszczady Forest Railway Foundation , operations were resumed in sections as a museum railway from July 4, 1997. From May to September the trains run on weekends, in July and August even daily from Majdan to Balnica and in the other direction to Przysłup .
