The Stryj – Łupków railway is a branch line in Poland and the Ukraine . It runs from Stryj - a town in western Ukraine - via Drohobych , Sambir and Chyriw to Zagórz in Poland and from there to the Slovakian border at Łupków . In addition, there are branches to Boryslaw and Truskavets south of Drohobych.

The line, which used to have a gauge of 1520 mm (Russian broad gauge; to Starjawa ) or 1435 mm (European standard gauge; to Chyriw ) is single-track, electrified between Stryj and Sambir, and operations on the Ukrainian side are carried out by the Ukrainian Railways , in Especially the Lvivska Salisnyzja , led. On the Polish side there is freight traffic from Zagórz to Ustrzyki Dolne , on the remaining section there is also passenger traffic, this is carried out by the Polish State Railways .

The eastern section of the route to Chyriw was created under the leadership of the Dniester Railway , the section Chyrów – Drohobycz – Stryj (100.21 kilometers) was opened on December 31, 1872 together with the branch line Drohobycz – Borysław (11.45 kilometers). The western part from Chyriw was opened in several stages in 1872 by the First Hungarian-Galician Railway (the Łupków tunnel into what was then Hungary only on May 30, 1874).

The Dniester Railway was nationalized as early as 1876 and the First Hungarian-Galician Railway operated until the end of 1883. After that, the kk state railways took over the operation, from 1889 the operation on the western parts of the line was taken over by the state railways.

The line to Truskavets came relatively late. It was opened on June 1, 1912 as the standard gauge local railway Drohobycz – Truskawiec , the operation was taken over by the Austrian State Railways.

With the fall of the Habsburg Monarchy , all railway lines came to the Polish State Railways , during the Second World War the lines came under the control of the Soviet railways in 1939, which changed the lines to broad gauge, but this was reversed after the attack on the Soviet Union by Germany in 1941 made and subordinated the routes of the Eastern Railway . The route was assigned the following:

  • Nowy Zagorz - Chyrow - Sambor - Stryj: route number 534b
  • Drohobycz - Boryslau: route number 534d
  • Drohobycz - Truskawiec Zdroj: route number 534e
  • Nowy Zagorz - Lupkow - Medzilaborce: No. 532t

After the end of the Second World War, the eastern part of the line fell to the Soviet Union, which switched the lines back to Russian broad gauge, but the standard gauge between Krościenko and Przemyśl also remained. Until November 9, 2010, a train service between Sanok and Chyriw was offered, and until 1995 there was even a corridor service between Przemyśl and Krościenko. Since then, cross-border traffic has been interrupted, on the Ukrainian side the trains run from Sambir to Starjawa and between Sambir and Stryj, on the Polish side the line to the Hungarian border from Zagórz is only used for goods traffic to Ustrzyki Dolne , local goods traffic continues to cross over the border to Slovakia , passenger traffic was stopped on August 29, 2010. Since June 11, 2017, passenger trains have been running again across the Polish-Slovakian border on weekends in summer, and the Zagórz – Łupków section has been served daily by passenger trains since June 23, 2018.
