history

Ruins of the monastery

The village of Zagórz was founded in the 14th century after Red Ruthenia was annexed to the Kingdom of Poland. It initially belonged to the Tarnawski family, but was sold to Piotr Kmita Sobieński in 1490 . It changed hands frequently in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1710 a fortified Carmelite monastery was built. After the Polish partitions, the monastery in the place now under Austrian rule was closed in 1789 in the reforms of Josephinism . In 1830 the monastery complex burned down.

In 1880 Zagórz had 1,639 inhabitants. The population consisted of Poles, Rusins, Jews and Germans. In the Second Polish Republic , the place belonged to the Lviv Voivodeship . On September 12, 1939, the occupation by German troops took place, which lasted until September 13, 1944, when the Red Army moved in. In the district of Zasław, the German occupation set up a forced labor camp to which Jews from Sanok and the surrounding area were deported, who were later mainly killed in the Belzec extermination camp .

1977 Wielopole was incorporated.
