history

Forest railway Câmpu Cetății (1996)

The railway was opened in 1954 to transport the felled wood with flat cars and wooden stools. As on most forest railways, so-called wagons were carried at the end of the train going uphill.

There was also a temporary siding on the CFR line Târgu Mureş – Sovata , which ran on the northern outskirts of Câmpu Cetății.

Used came mainly steam locomotives of MÁVAG type 70 , including 764,441 and 764,467. They were scrapped after the railway was closed. Another locomotive, the 764.460, was last in service. Today it is in use on the Hungarian forest railway from Lenti and Csömödér . Operations ceased in 1997. The line was dismantled the following year. The building of the former engine shed in Câmpu Cetății has been converted and structurally repaired.

Route description

The route began at the northeast end of Câmpu Cetății. From there it led 8 km in a south-easterly direction into the Gurghiu Mountains. The forest areas along the route were characterized by mixed beech forests.
