Maros-Tordaer Kleinbahn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maros-Tordaer Kleinbahn (also Mieresch-Thorenburger-Kleinbahn , Romanian: Mocăniţa Transilvaniei ) is a star-shaped railway network with the Bosnian gauge of 760 mm in and around Târgu Mureș in Transylvania , Romania , which has existed since 1915 .

description

When it was founded, a company called “Marostordai hev” was the concessionaire. In addition to the Alba Iulia – Târgu Mureș railway with a standard-gauge network, the lines run from the touch station at Ungheni to Miheșu de Câmpie (Bienendorf) , to Lechința (Lechnitz) and to Praid (Salt Mountain ) with a total length of 183.8 km. Their purpose was passenger and goods traffic, the latter in particular for the Târgu Mureș sugar factory.

The Marostordai hev later became part of the Hungarian State Railways, the Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV). MÁV held the concession until Hungary had to cede the Széklerland to Romania under the Trianon Treaty . The Marostordaer Kleinbahn was subsequently transferred to their state railway Căile Ferate Române (CFR). With the Second Vienna Arbitral Award , the Széklerland became Hungarian again, and the MÁV replaced the CFR. The concessionaire struggled with a shortage of locomotives, so she had 25 locomotives transferred from overland, forest , field and factory railways to Târgu Mureș.

The railway has been part of the CFR for the second time since 1947. In the 1970s, the operation was gradually converted from steam to diesel operation and the 8.2 km long Băile Sovata - Praid section was closed on March 24, 1975. Despite the end of communism, the Marostordaer Kleinbahn was preserved, not least thanks to good customers in freight transport. Tourist trains have been running between Târgu Mureș and Band since 2003.

The railway line between Târgu Mureș and Lechința, which was closed in 1997, was put into operation for its 100th anniversary on August 15, 2015 between the towns of Râciu and Teaca (Teckendorf) in the Bistrița-Năsăud district .
