Waldemar Andrzej Fydrych (called Major ) (born April 8, 1953 in Toruń ) is a Polish social activist and happening artist . He is the founder of the Orange Alternative ( Pomarańczowa Alternatywa ) movement.

Life

Fydrych studied history and art history at the University of Wroclaw . He began his independent activity in the 1970s. After August 1980 he founded the “Movement for New Culture” (Ruch na Rzecz Nowej Kultury) in Wroclaw . Shortly thereafter, in 1981, he laid the foundation for the Orange Alternative movement .

At the time of the state of war in Poland, the major became known as the one who painted dwarf figures on the walls of houses painted with stains. Those patches of color were supposed to cover up anti-regime slogans. From 1986 he began to organize events that still take place at regular intervals today. In 2005 there were over 60 that have since gone down in history as the Orange Alternative .

He has received numerous awards for his work: in 1988 he received the Solidarity Prize from the editors of Puls in London and from Polkul in Australia. It was also “honored” with particular attention from the Ministry of Homeland Security, which closely monitored Major Fydrych's activity. In May 1988, during an event where he was distributing sanitary towels (a rarity at the time), Waldemar Fydrych was arrested and sentenced to three months in prison. However, in view of the mass demonstrations that followed, he was released shortly afterwards.

The major is controversially loved, hated and admired. Waldemar Fydrych always showed imagination and imagination. Very early on he took a liking to mislead others. Called up for drafting for the purpose of performing basic military service, he appeared in the uniform of a major. Although he was reluctant to do military service, he feigned unbridled enthusiasm, which was taken as insanity. When asked to pay homage to his superior, he began to refer to him as a colonel while calling himself a major. His pseudonym comes from this time and has remained with him to this day.

Brief biographical note based on a doctoral thesis by Nicole Gourgaud (University of Lyon, November 93).
