Waldemar Levy Cardoso (born December 4, 1900 in Rio de Janeiro , † May 13, 2009 ibid) was a Brazilian field marshal .

His parents were Jewish emigrants from Morocco . In 1918 Cardoso joined the Brazilian army . He was the only Brazilian Field Marshal still alive in 2009 and a World War II veteran . As a lieutenant colonel , he was in command of an artillery battalion of the Força Expedicionária Brasileira and took part in the Battle of Monte Castello in Italy on the side of the United States .

After the military coup in 1964, he briefly held a leading position in the War Ministry. In 1967 he became head of the National Petroleum Council of Brazil (Conselho Nacional do Petróleo). From 1971 to 1985 he was on the supervisory board of the national oil company Petrobras , which he briefly chaired in 1969.
