The Waldschmidthaus , officially Rachelschutzhaus , is a 1,360 m high mountain hut on the Großer Rachel in the Bavarian Forest National Park .

The building is located directly below the second highest peak in the Bavarian Forest at 1,453 m . It was built in 1912 by the Spiegelau section of the Bavarian Forest Association , inaugurated on September 1, 1912 and named after Maximilian Schmidt , known as Waldschmidt. Two thirds of the construction costs of 12,000 marks were covered by bonds, which could no longer be repaid after a fall in visitor numbers due to the war. That is why the Waldschmidthaus was auctioned off in 1920 and acquired by a local carter. The restaurant and the original 46 beds were initially managed by his family and later leased. As of 2012, it was no longer possible to stay overnight due to fire protection regulations, and in the 2017 season the catering was also closed due to structural defects. In November 2017, the Free State of Bavaria acquired the property and assigned it to the national park administration. She announced a rapid renovation, leasing and, in the medium term, the resumption of overnight accommodation.

A beautiful view of the Rachelsee and across to the Lusen opens up from the nearby observation rock, while the summit of the Großer Rachel, only a 15-minute walk away, offers a comprehensive panorama, from which the Bavarian Alps can also be seen under the influence of the foehn . The lesser-known Little Rachel can also be reached from the hut .
