Wales Island ( Inuktitut : Shartoo ; formerly Prince of Wales Island ) is an uninhabited island of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in the Qikiqtaaluk region of the Canadian territory of Nunavut .
The island is 1.5 km off the coast of the Melville Peninsula on the south of the Gulf of Boothia in Committee Bay .
The land area of Wales Island is 1137 km². Wales Island is 63 km from north to south and 23 km from east to west. The highest point on the island is 165 m.
The island was named "Prince of Wales Island" by the Scottish polar explorer John Rae . The island name was later shortened and has since been called "Wales Island".
