The United States Geological Survey mapped it using its own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy between 1960 and 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1970 after the American engineer Eric Arthur Walker (1910-1995), President of Pennsylvania State University from 1956 to 1970 and co-founder and president of the National Academy of Engineering .
