Wallachia is a Norwegian extreme metal band, which was founded in 1992 by Lars Stavdal in Steinkjer as a solo project and was dedicated to the topic of the Dracula myth.

Band history

In 1992, Lars Stavdal founded the band Wallachia. Since he couldn't find any other musicians in his hometown Steinkjer who were interested in Black and Death Metal , he began to write his own songs on his own. He then planned to record his own demo , which was not possible due to the lack of equipment and money. Shortly afterwards he came into contact with the musician Eystein Garberg, who had already gained a lot of experience in his own band Folkvang . Together they recorded their first two songs on their home PC , whereupon the first demo was released in 1996 with the help of a 24-track recorder under the name Demo 1996 . Within a year, the band sold more than 700 copies. When an article about them appeared in the Swiss Skogen in 1997 , the French record label Velvet Music International became aware of the band and so Wallachia released their single Wallachia that same year . The two drummers Lars Erik and Mikael Duna joined the band, but shortly afterwards Eystein Garberg left the band.

In 1999 the debut album From Behind the Light was released , which thematically dealt with the devil , superstition and other religious topics. Shortly after the release, Velvet Music International broke up, so the album was no longer produced. Then it became quiet around the band, as Mikael Duna and Lars Erik had to do their military service . In 2005 From Behind the Light was reissued as a license cassette for the Eastern European market by the Ukrainian label Nightbirds Rex and in early 2006 the US label Dark Horizon Records also created a new edition of From Behind the Light , which, in addition to the songs on the album also included the songs from the 1996 demo as a bonus. In 2009 another album called Ceremony of Ascension was released , which should have been released in 2007. This album can no longer be clearly classified as Symphonic Black Metal, as it contains "cracking Death Metal, anthemic Black Metal and on top of that, Frickel attacks". The band has been working on their third album since 2004.

style

Wallachia's music, inspired by Bathory and Burzum as well as Florida Death Metal , is largely based on simple guitar harmonies, which are primarily supported by the keyboard. Vocally, the band orientated itself more towards distorted death growls , which the relevant metal press often took up as a point of criticism.
