Wallenstein Days

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wallenstein Days are a regular folk festival in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund . It is one of the largest historical folk festivals in northern Germany . Every year on a July weekend (in 2016 from July 21st to 24th) with a historical folk festival including a parade, market bustle and numerous events, the defense against the siege of the city of Stralsund by Wallenstein in 1628 is commemorated.

The festival was celebrated for the first time in 1825 and then continued until 1945 with a few exceptions. To DDR -times this tradition was discontinued - only since 1991, there will again be held annually.

The historical festival traditionally begins with the sneer . After Wallenstein's withdrawal, legend has it that wind players from the city walls dedicated scornful songs to the imperial general. The festival is then opened by the historical figure of Lambert Steinwich , who was mayor during the siege. Before that there will be a parade in historical costumes through the old town of Stralsund to the old market .

Market bustle based on historical models takes place on the Old Market. From here until 2008, traders along the streets to the Neuer Markt offered their goods. Rides were inviting on the Neuer Markt . Spectacles on the harbor island provided further entertainment.

Since 2009, the festival has mainly taken place on the Alter Markt, Semlower Strasse , Fährstrasse and the harbor.
