Wallace "Walley" Barnes (born January 16, 1920 in Brecon , † September 4, 1975 ) was a Welsh football player and presenter.

life and career

Barnes began his wartime center forward with Southampton FC . In 1943 he came to Arsenal , where he was used everywhere as an all-rounder, including as a goalkeeper. In 1944 Barnes seriously injured his knee. His comeback came two years later when he made his official league debut against Preston North End on November 9, 1946. With the Gunners, he won two English championships and an English cup. 1953 - in the championship season - Barnes could not play actively for the Gunners due to old knee problems , but was still champions as an injured player. The designated penalty taker for the Gunners ended his active career in 1956. Internationally, Barnes played 22 times for the Welsh national football team . He made his debut on October 18, 1947 against England and was even captain of the national team. After retiring, he became a TV presenter for the BBC . He commented on numerous important cup finals and games in the English first division. Barnes even released a biography called "Captain of Wales" . He worked as a BBC presenter until his death in 1975, at the age of 55.
