The pilgrimage church Gwabl stands lonely at the end of a crossroads high above the valley floor in the village of Gwabl in the municipality of Ainet in the district of Lienz in the state of Tyrol . The Roman Catholic branch church of the Ainet parish church , consecrated for the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , belongs to the Lienz dean's office in the Innsbruck diocese . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

The church was mentioned in a document in 1722. With the exception of the tower, the church was rebuilt from the middle of the 18th century and completed in 1807.

The Marian pilgrimage with regional significance had its heyday around 1800.

architecture

The classicist church building with a baroque north tower stands at the end of a path with brick stations of the cross.

A detached choir with a straight end connects to the simple nave. The church building under a steep gable roof shows rounded edges in the upper area of ​​the facades. The main front with a curved gable shows a pilaster painting. Above the flat arched main portal, an inscription mentions 1807, above it stands the figure of St. Ulrich from the 15th century. The tower on the north side of the nave shows a floor structure, round-arched sound windows, it has an onion hood with a lantern and mentions 1752. The sacristy annex is to the east of the tower.

The interior of the church shows itself as a single-nave two-bay nave under a barrel vault with stitch caps on pilasters. The triumphal arch is rounded. The retracted choir under a dome has a straight end. On the long side, the nave and the choir have a strong double cornice. The gallery with a curved parapet stands on pillars.

The vault paintings were created by Christoph Brandstätter the Elder at the beginning of the 19th century, they show decorative painting with vases and wreaths, as well as the wedding of Mary in the nave , the annunciation and the temple passage on the side, evangelists in the stitched caps, and the Assumption choir with the Twelve Apostles .

Furnishing

The high altar from 1836 has a column structure with cranked entablature, vases, putti, and a volute attachment, it shows the miraculous image of Mariahilf in the center and the image of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in the top, it carries the statues Peter and Paul in an alabaster setting from the second half of the 17th century Century.

The side altars show the relief of St. Maria and below the picture St. Philomena, on the right the relief St. Joseph and below the picture St. Magdalena. The pulpit from the beginning of the 19th century shows Empire ornaments and on the pulpit roof the statue of the Good Shepherd . On the gallery is the picture Descent from the Cross by the painter Georg Egger in 1868. The Stations of the Cross were made around 1800. There are votive tablets.
