Pilgrimage Church of Marterle

The Marterle pilgrimage church is located 1861 meters above sea level near Wenneberg in the municipality of Rangersdorf .

history

In the place of the church there has always been a weather cross made from a tree trunk with a statue of the suffering Savior in a niche under the crossbar. The Wenneberg Alpine Chapel was built in 1854 and the measurement license was granted in 1872 . When the chapel became dilapidated, the foundation stone for today's church was laid in 1902, which was built by master builder Christian Ebner based on plans by Johann Rothschopf. On June 22, 1906, the church was consecrated by Prince-Bishop Josef Kahn .

Building

The church is a small, long building with a detached, polygonal apse on the outside . The two-story, brick south tower is crowned by a wooden turret with a pointed helmet. The facade is structured by arched windows and portals as well as flat pilasters.

A flat ceiling spans the three-axis nave. The triumphal arch separates the nave from the sanctuary, the inside semicircular apse. Josef Buchauer painted the church in 1905 with pseudo-architecture : the walls with pilasters and acanthus leaves, coffered ceiling with banding . In the choir vault portraits of evangelists are depicted in banded medallions.

Facility

The neo-baroque furnishings were made in 1905 by Johann Rothschopf, the figures on the altars by Val Gardena carvers . The center of the main altar is a copy of the "Martele Christ", flanked by Saints Wendelin and Isidore . The two side altars are dedicated to Anthony of Padua and Maria Lourdes . The Stations of the Cross were painted by Josef Buchauer in 1905. The altar from the former Alpine chapel with the miraculous image of the suffering Savior was placed under the choir. One bell dates from the 13th century.
