action

The miller's daughter Marie is celebrating her 18th birthday. King Michael, returning home from a failed bridal search, hears a chant which he follows and finally arrives at the mill. There he meets Marie and falls in love with her.

The miller Veit, whose wish is to become the royal miller at court, boasts that his daughter Marie can turn straw into gold. The ruler could use gold because the treasury is empty. During the night the Minister Schotter sneaks to the mill and kidnaps the miller's daughter to the castle.

She is locked in a room full of straw and is supposed to spin it into gold by morning. A little man appears unexpectedly to take on this task. He takes her ring for it.

The minister is enthusiastic and locks her in a second chamber with more straw on which she can chip it to gold until morning. During the night the little dwarf helps her again and he takes her collar for it. The minister locks her in a third, even larger chamber and promises to release her if she manages again. The little goblin wants to help her that night too, but only on condition that she has her firstborn child when she becomes queen. She agrees because she cannot imagine being a poor miller's daughter one day as queen. And for the third time gold is spun from the straw.

King Michael is already searching all over the country for his bride who has disappeared without a trace. The minister makes him believe that she fell into the Wolfsschlucht in the forest and was no longer alive. On the other hand, he is amazed at the vast amounts of straw that the minister has brought to the castle. One night he hears Marie's beautiful singing and realizes that she is being held captive in his castle. He can free Marie and marries her. Less than a year later, their child is born and so the little man appears and wants to keep the promise. Marie does not want to surrender her child and is given a three-day delay. During this time she has to find out his name, then she can keep the child.

Marie listens to everything and with the help of two traders she finds the little man in the Wolfsschlucht and watches as he dances around his campfire and sings with anticipation:

“Today I'll bake, tomorrow I'll brew, the day after tomorrow I'll bring the queen her child. Oh, how good that nobody knows that my name is Rumpelstiltskin . "

When the little man appears and can give Marie his real name, he curses screeching to himself: “The devil told you that, the devil told you that!” Angrily, it stamps its foot and disappears without a trace.
