action

Gerda and Kay have been best friends since childhood and secretly love each other. Kay even built Gerda a heated glass house so that her roses can grow in it even in the cold winter and not freeze to death. But that infuriates the Snow Queen, who tries in vain to turn flowers into ice. When Kay then mocks her, she throws a splinter of ice in Kay's eye and suddenly the lovable boy turns into a cold-hearted boy. Gerda no longer understands him and they fight. Kay smashes a pane of the glass house, so that the blooming roses have to freeze to death. In his anger, Kay runs across the snowy landscape and meets the Snow Queen, who asks him to join her in the sleigh. He willingly lets her take him to her ice palace. Gerda stays behind in despair and tries to find Kay. But all she has left is his sled on a half-frozen river.

Even when spring comes, Kay doesn't come back. Although everyone believes that he is dead, Gerda is convinced that he is alive. So she goes looking for her boyfriend. On the river bank, Gerda is met by a boat, into which she climbs to let herself drift. Her journey takes Gerda into the blooming realm of flora, a summer garden in wonderful bloom. The simple-minded Flora, who actually means well by Gerda, gives her a sap to drink, which makes her temporarily forget Kay. Flora really enjoys not being alone anymore and would like to keep Gerda with her forever. But Gerda's memory comes back and with it the wish to find Kay, and so she doesn't stay any longer and moves on. She found out from Flora that a boy named Kay would live in the castle and so she went there. She sneaks into the stately home, but has to discover that the prince is not her Kay. Nevertheless, she is welcomed in a friendly manner and Gerda has a good time. They would like to keep her at the castle too, but after a longing dream Gerda wants to move on.

Kay meanwhile feels Gerda's dream and suddenly loses sight of the ice splinter. As a result, he no longer feels comfortable in the snow queen's ice palace, but he does not show this to his ruler and plays the cold-hearted boy the way she likes it. When Kay cuts himself on a shard of ice and a drop of blood in the snow looks like a red rose, his memory also comes back. He tries to escape from the palace, but the Snow Queen holds him back.

Gerda allows herself to be taken away from the castle in a carriage, but it is attacked by robbers in the forest. The girl has to fear for her life and is only lucky because the daughter of the robber chief wants someone to play with and her mother cannot refuse the child. The robbers don't like this at all, but they have to submit. The robber's daughter initially treats Gerda like a slave, but the more Gerda tells about her Kay and doesn't let up, the more she admires the girl and ultimately lets her "free". So Gerda wanders on and gradually reaches the area of eternal snow, where she collapses exhausted and is found by a Lappin . Gerda nurses them, who then starts the last part of her search.

When Gerda finally arrives at the Snow Queen's ice palace, she has to realize that it is not in her power to destroy the love between Gerda and Kay. So the two young people return to their village and enjoy the next spring together.

reception

criticism

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv said: “The implementation [of the fairy tale] captivates with intoxicatingly beautiful images, which above all emphasize the contrast between the sea of flowers in spring and the barren snow desert. Costume and equipment are equally well done, the young actors convince. A highlight among the fairy tale films. "

The editorial team of TV Spielfilm gave the "thumbs up" without comment.
