action
The original by Wilhelm Hauff served as a template and was largely adopted:
The twelve year old Jakob helps his mother sell vegetables at the market. He often carries the goods home to customers. An ancient woman buys some heads of cabbage; Young Jakob complains about the woman's strange behavior, but still carries the cabbage he had bought to her home. There the woman turns him into a dwarf with a long nose and he has to be of service to her. He is trained as a master chef. Years later he returns to his parents in his dwarf form, but they do not recognize him and chase him away. Thanks to the culinary art he learned, Jakob is employed at the Duke's court, where he meets the talking goose Mimi. As it turns out, Mimi has also been enchanted by the ancient woman.
When Duke Alois wants to marry Countess Wilhelmine, this calls for a special dish, a pie. (x)
Jacob's recipe for this pie lacks an unknown herb (sneeze) that he can find with the help of the goose. Because this herb was used to transform it at the time, it now enables it to transform itself back. As a handsome young man, Jakob brings the enchanted goose Mimi back to her father, who also transforms her back again.
