action

Prince Johannes celebrates his 8th birthday. His father gives him a horse, his mother a golden ball. During the celebration, the Black Knight suddenly appears and offers the king to look for the nature spirit in the forbidden forest, which for years has spread fear and terror and has cost many people their lives . Eventually the king forbade entering the forest. The king refuses the Black Knight's offer to capture the ghost, as his prohibition is law and applies to everyone. Nevertheless, the Black Knight goes into the forest with two squires and is able to fish the ghost - the iron man - out of a pond with the help of a trawl . He brings Eisenhans to the king, who has him locked up. The only reward the Black Knight receives is freedom, as he has acted against the king's command and should therefore be imprisoned. The black knight leaves furiously.

Johannes is curious, but the queen forbids him any contact with Eisenhans. One day he gets to the cage in which the man is trapped and throws his new ball so awkwardly that Eisenhans can catch it. To get the ball back, Johannes has to open the cage. Because he is afraid of his father, who threatens anyone who opens the cage with death, Eisenhans takes Johannes into the forest. Here Johannes gets to know nature and herbs. His only job is to keep the gold well clean and to make sure nothing falls into it. When Johannes puts his thumb in the water, it turns golden. Eisenhans lets the misconduct get away. But when Johannes later falls asleep at work and a strand of his hair gets into the water and turns golden, Eisenhans has had enough: he tells him out of the forest and lets him look for happiness in the distance. Should he ever need it, however, Johannes only has to call for Eisenhans. He goes far away and grows up over time.

One day Johannes comes to a castle where he initially works as a kitchen boy. He refines the king's soup with herbs, and the king is delighted. He has the cook and Johannes called over to him. As always, John wears his cap, which hides his strand of gold, and refuses to take it off in front of the king. The king has him thrown out for this insolence, but John finds a place with the gardener. He is laying out a wildflower bed. One day, when he took off his cap, his gold streak was shining in the sun so much that the princess noticed him. She has him bring flowers several times. One day she is saddened because the country is at war. The black knight puts people in fear and terror. Johannes wants to take part in the war, but is only laughed at by the knights. He goes into the forest, where he receives a horse, red armor and warriors from Eisenhans. In this way he saves the king's life when he is almost murdered by the Black Knight. Nobody knows the Red Knight, and the king has a festival in honor of the victory. All knights in the area should be invited. The princess, in turn, will choose her bridegroom at the festival. Whoever catches a golden apple thrown by her will keep her as a wife. Johannes arrives late for the festival and finally catches the apple in his gardening clothes. The king is horrified, but John reveals to him that he is a prince and that he saved his life as a red knight. Suddenly the Black Knight, who was secretly released, appears and challenges Johannes to a duel. With the support of Eisenhans, Johannes wins and the Black Knight falls into a deep well. Now the wedding can take place, to which Johannes' parents also appear. At the end he, in turn, goes into the forest with the princess to show her Eisenhans. This does not appear even after three calls - a sign that John no longer needs him.
