action

Queen Ute is heartbroken that she is still not "Good Hope". She longs dearly, like her husband, King Arthur, to have a child. When she sadly steps to the fountain in the courtyard and sadly a tear drips into the water, a frog appears and predicts that she will have a daughter this year. The prediction actually happens and everyone in the castle is celebrating the birth of little princess Rosalinde. There are even three days of celebration throughout the kingdom. All high dignitaries and the thirteen wise women are invited to the baptism. When the king learns that there are only twelve golden plates in the castle, he quickly decides to invite only twelve of the women. On the day of baptism, each of the wise women gives the child a very personal gift as godmother. So it is bestowed with everlasting beauty, virtue, wealth and many other good gifts. When the wise woman Zeta is the last to appear and has to find out that she is not charged, she places a curse on the child, which says that the princess will stab herself on a spindle on her fifteenth birthday and drop dead. Fortunately, Svenia, the penultimate godmother, has not yet announced her blessing. However, she cannot completely lift the curse, but can soften it so that Rosalinde will not drop dead, but should fall into a hundred-year sleep. The king immediately decreed that all spindles in the country were forbidden and should be delivered to the royal collection points. The people are outraged, but have to submit to the decree, albeit reluctantly.

Since the king and queen now think the danger has been averted, Rosalinde can grow up in peace. She dreams of having her own horse to ride tournaments or to make inventions like Leonardo da Vinci . On the day of her fifteenth birthday, she wakes up very early. The entire castle is still preparing for the celebration when Rosalinde meets a woman in the tower of the castle who is sitting at a spinning wheel. Since the young princess does not know such a device, she is very curious and would like to try it out. Before she knows it, she stabs herself on the spindle and immediately falls into a deep sleep. And with it all who live in the castle fall down as if dead and fall asleep on the spot. Over the years, a hedge of thorns grows around the property, so high that it is almost impossible to see what is behind it.

Nineteen-year-old Prince Frederik, who dreams of flying and who has already invented and tried out all kinds of flying devices, has also invented a primitive camera that he can attach to his pigeons. So he sends them out as his "living spies" to take aerial photos. His mother is proud of her clever son, but she wishes that he should marry slowly. That's why she has a little feast. A minstrel appears there, performing a ballad by Rosalinde and the curse that surrounds her. Although Prince Frederik does not believe in legends and fairy tales, he is puzzled when he evaluates the latest photos of his "living spies". He sees the sleeping young princess and the other castle residents. Immediately he sets off to look for the lock. When he actually finds it, he is amazed at how exactly the minstrel described it in his ballad. There seems to be no getting through the thorn hedge and the remains of young men tell of their futile attempts and a cruel death. As they approach, the thorn tendrils literally grab Prince Frederik and want to drag him to his death too. His squire can save him from this and both return to their home palace late in the evening. Prince Frederik lets his mother, Queen Margarete, treat his wounds and is dying to redeem Princess Rosalinde as soon as possible. He wonders how he could manage to overcome the thorn-protected walls of the castle. With the support of his science teacher, Professor Praetorius, he wants to build a balloon to fly into the courtyard. When all the preparations have been completed and the wind is favorable, Prince Frederik sets off on his adventure. Despite all the joy about the approaching destination of the journey, landing in the castle proves to be too difficult. The project fails and Prince Frederik has to land without having achieved anything and spend a night in the forest. The next day he continues on foot towards the castle and when he reaches it, the thorn tendrils give way by themselves, because at that moment the 100 years are over. Prince Frederik finds only sleeping people in the entire castle and searches for Rosalinde, who he actually finds in the tower. He kisses her on the forehead and not only does the princess wake up, but everyone in the castle with her. Rosalinde is enthusiastic about Prince Frederik, also because he shares her love for science. While they kiss, the entire court cheers them.

background

The shooting took place on 24 September 2007 to 19 October 2007 at Salzburg, especially in the region Lungau on the Mauterndorf Castle and Castle Finstergrün instead. It premiered on television on December 26, 2008. The first broadcast was followed by 1.04 million viewers.

Deviations from the literature

The special feature of this film adaptation is the integration of science. The prince is an enthusiastic researcher and inventor who dreams of flying and has a natural scientist as his teacher and who has invented a primitive little camera with which he can take aerial photos using a pigeon. A photo of this device brings him on the trail of Sleeping Beauty, and he wants to fly over the dangerous thorn hedge with a self-made balloon.
