Life

Origin and family

Walram von Kessel came from the ancient lineage of the Counts of Kessel . He had two brothers and after their death he inherited the county. In February 1296 he married Katharina von Kleve, daughter of Dietrich von Kleve and Adelheid von Geldern. The marriage remained childless, so that the count family died out with Walram's death. His fortune fell by inheritance to the  Duke of Jülich .

Career and work

He was first mentioned in a document on October 23, 1265. On May 29, 1272 he elected Otto von Tecklenburg to the monastery administrator with the cathedral chapter . After the death of Bishop Gerhard von der Mark there were disagreements about the election of bishops, so that the new Bishop Everhard von Diest could not take office until 1275. Walram owned a canonical in the parish of St. Gereon in Cologne and was also provost in Beckum. In a contract dated December 24, 1289, Walram placed his estates and with them Brüggen Castle under the protection of the  Duke of Brabant . Walram also had considerable possessions in the Hunsrück . Because of this, he got into a dispute with Count Palatine Rudolf , which ended on October 4, 1296 with a settlement. With this he gave up some wineries and the villages of Schnorbach and Ebschied .
