The Whale Lake is one of numerous small lakes on the Fildes Peninsula of King George Island , the largest of the South Shetland Islands . It is located in the north of the peninsula, north of Davies Heights (labeled on the German map from 1984 as "Central Mountains"), and drains over the Walbach in a west-northwest direction to Walbucht and thus to Drakestrasse . Between Walsee and Davies Heights there are still the shell lake and the snow lake .

As part of two German expeditions to the Fildes Peninsula in 1981/82 and 1983/84 under the direction of Dietrich Barsch (Geographical Institute of the University of Heidelberg ) and Gerhard Stäblein (Geomorphological Laboratory of the Free University of Berlin ), the lake and numerous others until then unnamed geographic features of the Fildes peninsula and renamed the Scientific Committee on Antarctic research (Scientific Committee on Antarctic research, SCAR) reported.
