Walt Disney Diamond Edition
The Diamond Edition is a series of the most famous Disney films that has been released on Blu-ray and DVD at regular intervals since autumn 2009 . These films had previously been released in the Platinum Edition from 2001 to spring 2009 . It is expected to reissue most of the previously published titles on both DVD and Blu-ray Disc by 2015, although, similar to the Platinum Edition , two will be published per year as a rule. Since all publications are withdrawn from the market after a certain period of time, annually in January, they have a high collector's value and can often only be acquired for high prices on the used market.

history
Disney originally planned to reissue one of ten new titles in October each year. These films are characterized by certain peculiarities, such as the collaboration of Walt Disney , new animation methods or great successes in the cinema and on VHS.
In 2001 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released on DVD and VHS. This was followed by Beauty and the Beast (2002) and The Lion King (2003). In May 2003, Disney announced, however, that four more titles would be added to the Platinum Edition ( Peter Pan , Sleeping Beauty , Pinocchio , Fantasia ) and two releases per year, one in October, one in February / March. The reasons for this are said to have been high sales of the limited editions. In addition, collectors should be able to complete this series before the successor to DVD hits the market. So the time it took to collect all the DVDs was cut from ten years to seven years.
Originally, Aladdin was also part of this series. However, since 2008 rumors have spread that Disney removed Aladdin from the Platinum Edition as it was re-released in the UK and Germany and out of that series. These rumors were confirmed when Disney issued a press release on the Diamond Edition in 2009 , listing all the films from the previous Platinum Edition, with the exception of Aladdin , which was replaced by Fantasia 2000 . Previously, the German Disney branch announced on request and on its website that Alice in Wonderland would succeed Aladdin . This information has not been confirmed by any other Disney agency and should therefore be viewed as misinformation. Disney made no official statement about the reasons why there was an exchange in the first place, but it is suspected that Aladdin did not sell well in the USA.
The Platinum Edition DVDs up to and including Peter Pan were published as Special Editions in Germany , while in the USA they appeared under the name Platinum Edition from the very beginning . It is only since The Jungle Book that the films have also been marked on the cover internationally. In addition to the 2-disc editions, a “Collector's Set” has been published there for some films since The Jungle Book , which, in addition to the normal 2-disc edition, also includes lavish packaging and a book with film images and background information. So-called "Gift Sets" appeared in the USA for The Lion King , Aladdin and Cinderella , which, in addition to the film, also contained a book and other extras such as lithographs.
Sleeping Beauty was released on October 16, 2008 as the first Disney classic on Blu-ray . It was also available in a normal edition with 2 DVDs and in the “Collector's Edition” with an enclosed book. Since January 2010, all editions have only been available in stores as residual copies. The first edition of Pinocchio was published on DVD and Blu-Ray in a very limited wooden box. The wooden box version cost just as much as the normal version and has the same EAN code .
The Diamond Edition started with the new edition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on DVD and Blu-Ray in October 2009. A press release published in the spring listed the 13 titles in the new series. In November 2010, the Diamond Edition series was continued by Beauty and the Beast . In these editions, the film was released as a double Blu-ray Disc with an accompanying DVD. Bambi's reissue in March 2011 only included one disc, both in its DVD and Blu-ray editions. The Lion King , which followed in November 2011, contained the same pattern as its predecessor, but limited wooden boxes were released in both formats that contained all three parts.
In autumn 2011, after a press release, it was announced that 101 Dalmatians had been taken out of line and will appear as a special edition in early autumn 2012, at the same time as Cinderella . It was also announced in January 2012 that Aladdin was re-included in the series and will be released for the first time on Blu-ray in the spring of 2013 as the Diamond Edition. In January 2013, Disney Germany announced via Facebook that there will be no publication in the context of the "Diamond Collection" in spring 2013. Aladdin will be released as a regular Blu-ray release in April 2013. In summer 2012, after another press release, it was announced that Peter Pan would be released as a special edition on Blu-ray in November 2012. Peter Pan was therefore not included in the "Diamond Collection". In January 2013, after another press release, it was announced that The Jungle Book will be published for the first time on Blu-ray on September 26, 2013 as part of the "Diamond Collection". On April 11, 2013, Disney Germany announced, after yet another press release, that Ariel the Mermaid will appear on DVD on September 5 and for the first time on Blu-ray Disc. They also announced that the original synchro version from 1989 will also be available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
restoration
Every title in the Platinum Edition that was written before 1991 and that has not yet used the specially developed CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) system is digitally restored before publication in order to restore the original picture and sound quality. This is not necessary for any of the films made later, as the raw drawings were scanned in directly and digitally cleaned and colored on the computer. For the republication of the films Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King were u. a. the color scheme changed / optimized a little and new music scenes added. In the case of Beauty and the Beast , it is the song Human Again , which was originally removed during the production of the film and only used again in the musical. The morning report from The Lion King, on the other hand, was produced especially for the musical.
Each film in the 7.1 series was also awarded sound , which is only included on the Blu ray editions. For this, films like Snow White , which were mono in the original sound, were completely remixed.
Extras
All DVDs contain extras such as games, galleries, additional scenes (as storyboards ), specially produced music videos and making-ofs . The making-ofs are of different lengths for each film and can either be viewed with German subtitles or over-spoken. Many DVDs also have audio comments that can be switched on or off at will; on Blu-rays , these are usually available as picture-in-picture commentary , with additional picture material being displayed. Since Bambi was released in the Diamond Edition, the extras are limited to the DVD editions, whereas the Blu-ray versions contain more extensive additional material.
