Walter Carmona

Walter Carmona (born June 21, 1957 in São Paulo ) is a former Brazilian judoka . He was an Olympic Knight in 1984.

The 1.83 m tall Carmona competed in the weight class up to 86 kilograms, the middleweight. In 1978 he won the bronze medal at the student world championships in Rio de Janeiro. At the Judo World Championships in Paris in 1979, he lost to French Michel Sanchis in the quarter-finals , and after two victories in the round of hope he received the bronze medal. In 1980 Carmona won both the middleweight and the open class at the Pan American Championships. He also took part in both competitions at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. In the middleweight division he was defeated by the Cuban Isaac Azcuy in the semifinals and lost the battle for bronze to Detlef Ultschfrom the GDR. In the open class, he dropped out early against the Bulgarian Dimitar Saprjanow .

At the Judo World Championships in 1981 Carmona also reached the semi-finals in the middleweight division, after losing to the Japanese Seiki Nose , he was defeated in the battle for bronze as in the previous year against Detlef Ultsch. In 1982 Carmona was again third in the student world championships. At the Pan American Games in 1983 in Caracas, Carmona also won bronze. In May 1984 Carmona won the Pan American Championships. Two and a half months later, he reached the semi-finals at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. There he was defeated by the US judoka Robert Berland , in the battle for bronze Carmona won against the British Densign White . In 1988 Carmona returned to the judo mat and started at the Olympic Games in Seoul . After an opening win he lost his second fight against the Japanese Akinobu Ōsako and was eliminated.
