Walter Deffaa

Walter Deffaa (born August 12, 1951 ) is a German former EU official and was Director General of the Regional Policy Directorate- General . Previously, he was Head of Taxation and Customs Union and the Internal Audit Service .

Life

Deffaa studied economics at the University of Tübingen and the Technical University of Berlin . He received his doctorate in 1981 at the University of Hohenheim with a thesis on "Anonymized surveys with randomly encrypted answers". He joined the European Union in 1983. Before that he worked as a consultant for the Federal Chancellery and the North Rhine-Westphalian State Chancellery. After numerous posts in the Commission (including as head of the cabinet of Monika Wulf-Mathies 1997–1999), he took over the management of the audit service in 2004 and in 2009 moved to the head of the Directorate-General for Taxes and Customs Union. Deffaa was Director General for Regional Policy since February 2012. He retired on September 1, 2016, and was succeeded by Marc Lemaître .
