Walter Dell

Walter Dell (born January 19, 1899 in Vienna ; † July 9, 1980 ibid) was an Austrian painter.

Life

Walter Dell served in the war and was imprisoned in Italy from 1917 to 1919. From 1920 he studied restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Rudolf Jettmar and Serafin Maurer. From 1926 he was a decorative painter at Schloss Philippshof in the CSR. In 1927 he took a restoration course. 1937–1942 he was a theater painter at the Burgtheater and at the Vienna State Opera . After that he worked as a set designer in Eger and Franzensbad, Karlsbad and Dresden until 1944. From 1945 to 1947 he worked as a set designer in Vienna. From 1947 to 1966 he worked as a freelance theater painter for stage and film, among others at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He went on study trips to Italy, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Switzerland and Scandinavia. From 1966 until his death in 1980 he devoted himself to freelance artistic work.

Dell created style-pluralistic murals, oil paintings, portraits and drawings. The oeuvre is characterized by impressionistically inspired depictions of his homeland. Many works deal with Vienna and the surrounding area. There are numerous horse motifs in his work. He preferred the watercolor technique and for portraits the oil mixing technique. On his Mediterranean travels, he mainly made pictures and sketches. Work example: View from Leopoldsberg to the Danube , 1926 (auction date: March 29, 1990).

He was a nephew of Josef Dell . In 1939 Walter Dell married Theda ter Hell, who came from a Berlin artist family.
