Piedad Esneda Córdoba Ruiz (born January 25, 1955 in Medellín , Antioquia ) is a Colombian lawyer and politician . Between 2010 and 2014 she was a senator of the Partido Liberal Colombiano . She became internationally known through her mediation for the release of more than 30 Farc prisoners in 2007 and 2008, for which she campaigned together with the then President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez.

Life

For the first six years of her political career, she worked as a local politician in Medellín from 1984 . Between 1990 and 1994 she was a member of the House of Representatives . She has held a seat in the Senate almost continuously since 1994. In 1999 she was kidnapped by the paramilitary organization Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) and went to Canada for a few months because of the threats after her release . In October 2005 she founded the left platform Poder Ciudadano Siglo XXI ( 21st century bourgeois power ) within her party . As a senator, she works primarily for the implementation of human rights and against discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation and ethnic origin.

In 2007 she mediated together with the Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez in the hostage crisis between the Colombian government and the Farc guerrilla . For her mediation efforts, Córdoba was nominated for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Córdoba Ruiz is an activist for the left-wing organization Marcha Patriótica .

She was expelled from the Senate in September 2010 because of her contacts with the FARC and was denied the right to stand as a candidate for 14 years.
