Walter Eckhard

Moritz Karl Walter Eckhard (born October 15, 1903 in Döbeln , † September 15, 1982 in Leisnig ) was a German painter and graphic artist. His artistic spectrum ranged from commercial graphics to advertising graphics and construction graphics. He also created a number of oil paintings and watercolors.

Career

Between 1918 and 1922, Eckhard completed a four-year apprenticeship as a lithographer and draftsman at the Leipzig large printing company FA Brockhaus , including attending the master school for the graphic arts there. This was followed by artistic studies at the Academy for Book Trade and Graphics in Leipzig until 1924 . From 1925 Walter Eckhard worked as a freelance graphic artist and draftsman. During this time he worked for various advertising studios, craft businesses, publishers, industrial companies and the Leipzig trade fair office .

On December 20, 1930, he married Emmy Eckhard, born in Thuringia. Petersen, with whom he was married until his death. The marriage remained childless. His wife died in Döbeln in 1998.

From August 1930 to February 1939 Walter Eckhard lived in Eindhoven (Netherlands) and worked as a graphic designer at NV Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken in the advertising studio of the radio factories. In an international working environment, he dealt with the fields of advertisements, posters, text illustrations and advertising brochures, with a series of advertising posters for Philips radios becoming his special trademark. Due to his qualifications, Eckhard was also entrusted with special tasks. These included u. a .:

  • Design of the Philips pavilion for the World Exhibition in Paris 1932
  • Design of the Philips pavilion for the world exhibition in Brussels in 1936
  • artistic preparations for the centenary of the university city of Leiden
  • artistic design of the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven 1937

Within a few years, Walter Eckhard was one of the most famous graphic artists in Holland. During this time he also made several oil paintings, mainly with Dutch or Belgian motifs.

In 1939 Walter Eckhard moved to Frankfurt am Main to work as a layouter for the Mc-Cann advertising agency.

In April 1942 he was called up for military service and ordered to the Eastern Front. After three years of military service and six months of imprisonment, he returned in October 1945 to his country house in Döbeln, which was completed in 1937. After several years of freelance work as a commercial graphic artist with a range of activities ranging from the creation of brochures, picture books, labels and company logos to flacon designs, Walter Eckhard decided in 1954 to shift his artistic focus to building graphics, where he was best known for his sgraffito work in Döbeln . In addition, he continued to work as an artistic advisor to museums. Other oil paintings and watercolors were only made sporadically.

From 1949 to 1956 Walter Eckhard was also politically active as a city councilor in Döbeln. He was a co-founder, long-time chairman of the local group and member of the district leadership of the German Cultural Association in Döbeln as well as a member of the Association of German Artists. In addition, he was responsible for the organization and implementation of art exhibitions, as well as co-founder and lecturer at painting schools in and around Döbeln. For his diverse activities he received public honors, including a. also an honorary pension from the GDR Council of Ministers.

Walter Eckhard died in 1982 in the hospital in Leisnig. His urn was buried in the Niederfriedhof in Döbeln.

In 1990 a street in Döbeln was named after Walter Eckhard.
