Walter Gerber (industrialist)
Walter Gerber (born February 28, 1879 in Thun ; † August 7, 1942 in Lucerne ) was a Bernese cheese merchant and co-inventor of processed cheese in 1911 .
Life
Walter Gerber received practical training from his father. In 1908 he and his associate Fritz Stettler took over the management of their parents' company. In 1911 they invented processed cheese and thus gained a cheese shape that can be easily shipped overseas. After converting his company to Gerber & Co. Aktiengesellschaft, he sold 25% of his shares to the Association of Swiss Milk Producers and later another 25% to Nestlé .
Walter Gerber then spent his old age with his wife Leonore on the Cote d'Azur in summer and at home in winter. At the age of 62, he died in his apartment in Lucerne in 1942.
