Walter Gerbino (born February 24, 1951 in Trieste ) is an Italian psychologist and, like Paolo Bozzi (1930–2003) and Giovanni Bruno Vicario (1932–2020), belongs to Gaetano Kanizsa ’s “School of Trieste” of Gestalt theory in Italy.

From 1982 to 1983 Gerbino was Full Professor of Psychology at the University of Padua . Since 1983 Gerbino has been Professor of General Psychology at the University of Trieste . From 1997 to 2003 he was also President of the Faculty of Psychology at this university; he has held this position again since 2006.

Gerbino's specialty is perceptual psychology , in particular the so-called "amodal supplement". This means the perception phenomenon that, in the case of certain visual templates, a figure that is not given at all or is only partially given in the stimulus template appears to continue in the perception under another figure. Such a phenomenon experimentally investigated by Gerbino is named after him "Gerbino illusion". In 2005, Gerbino published together with Fabrizio Ventimiglia and Carlo Fantoni the discovery of a new illusion, the so-called "Tangenten Illusion" (tangent illusion).
