Walter Höchstädter (art dealer)

Walter Höchstädter (born June 13, 1914 in Krumbach (Swabia) ; died July 8, 2007 in Melbourne , Australia ) was an emigrated German art dealer.

Life

Walter Höchstädter was born in June 1914 as the son of the textile merchant Hermann Höchstädter (1879-1965) and his wife Amalie (born March 17, 1891, maiden name: Bach). Early on, he was enthusiastic about East Asia, especially China. At the age of 15 he was a member of the China Institute (Frankfurt) and the Society for East Asian Art (Berlin). After a trip to China in 1934, he did not return to Germany due to the increasing persecution of Jews in the “ Third Reich ”. From 1938 he lived alternately in Hong Kong and New York . He caught up with his parents in 1940. His sister emigrated to Brazil .

Over the years Höchstädter developed into a respected connoisseur of Chinese art. He himself acted as a dealer and collector of Chinese works. At the end of his life he moved to Australia, where he died in Melbourne in July 2007. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Augsburg.
