Walter Klimmek

Walter Klimmek (born March 14, 1919 , † May 13, 2010 in Aschheim ) was a German football player .

Klimmek was a right defender and initially played for SC Hassel before moving to FC Schalke 04 in 1950 . With the Gelsenkirchen team , he was West German champion in his first season . At the same time, he lived up to the club's nickname Knappen , because his main job was as a miner underground at the Bergmannsglück colliery in his hometown. Klimmek played a total of 96 games for Schalke 04 and won the West German Cup with the team in 1956.

Until 1984, the year he retired, he later worked for the coking plant fire department in Hassel . Most recently he lived in Bavaria, where he died at the age of 91 and was buried in Aschheim .
