Walter Leimgruber

Walter Leimgruber (* 1959 in Herznach ) is a Swiss cultural scientist , historian and exhibition organizer . He is a full professor and head of the seminar for cultural studies and European ethnology at the University of Basel .

Life

Walter Leimgruber comes from the Fricktal and studied history , folklore and geography at the University of Zurich . 1985–1990 he was an assistant at the chair for modern history there and received his doctorate with a study of the US policy on Africa under President John F. Kennedy . After research stays in the USA , France and Germany , he was a research associate in the national research program “Cultural Diversity and National Identity”. He also worked as an exhibition organizer, journalist, editor for Swiss television, curator for the 20th century at the Swiss National Museum and as a project manager for the construction of the Forum of Swiss History. From 1995 he worked as a senior assistant at the Folklore Seminar of the University of Zurich, where he completed his habilitation in 2001 . Today he is a full professor for cultural studies and European ethnology at the University of Basel. Since 2003 he has been President of the “Languages ​​and Cultures” commission of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences. He also works as a consultant and evaluator for ministries, foundations and universities in various countries and sits on numerous cultural and scientific committees.

His main research interests are migration, social mechanisms of integration and exclusion, cultural concepts and cultural politics, visual anthropology and material culture / museology.
