Walter Möbius was born in Leuben near Dresden. Möbius is considered to be the first "in-house photographer" of the Deutsche Fotothek , a department of the Saxon State Library - State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) and its predecessor institutions. His recordings form the basis of the negative holdings of the collection created through his own recording activities. In more than 30 years of activity, almost 100,000 photographs were taken from 1924 until his death. He found his field of work mainly in Dresden and the surrounding area, in Saxon Switzerland and the Ore Mountains as well as in other places and landscapes in Germany. The German photo library acquired in 1975 also his personal estate with approximately 5,000 negatives. Möbius died on March 9, 1959 in his hometown.
