Walter Münze (born October 20, 1895 in Leipzig , † November 19, 1978 there ) was a German painter , graphic artist and communist .

The son of a cemetery worker first completed an apprenticeship as a retoucher before becoming a soldier in the First World War served. Back in Leipzig, he studied at the Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Trade from 1919 to 1925, where he became friends with his fellow student Alfred Frank . In 1922 he joined the KPD . Together with Frank, he founded the Leipzig branch of the Association of Revolutionary Visual Artists (ASSO) in 1928 .

After graduating, he taught at the Volkshochschule Leipzig until 1933 and then worked for various local publishers as an illustrator for books on plants and animals. During the Second World War Münze was drafted again as a soldier and was taken prisoner of war .

After the war he returned to the adult education center as a teacher and was finally head of the evening academy at the Academy of Graphics and Book Art in 1960 for four years .

Stylistically, his works were mainly influenced by post-impressionism and art nouveau as well as by Käthe Kollwitz .
