Walter Madelung

Walter Otto Madelung (born May 22, 1879 in Bonn ; † 1963 ) was a German chemist.

He was the son of Otto Wilhelm Madelung and brother of Erwin Madelung and Georg Hans Madelung . Madelung received his doctorate in 1905 at the University of Strasbourg (About tetraphenyl-p-xylylene. Contributions to the knowledge of dimethylquinone.) And was a professor at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

He dealt with indigo , dicyanamide, the composition of diphenyl and triphenyl methane dyes, tetraphenylethane dyes, the relationship between structure and color in dyes. The Madelung indole synthesis (1912) is named after him.
