Walter Mampe
Walter Mampe (born February 19, 1939 in Breslau ; † July 8, 1992 ) was a German experimental physicist who dealt in particular with neutron physics and nuclear physics .
Mampe studied at the University of Würzburg , the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1971 in Munich, with a thesis on neutron capture in mercury at Till von Egidy ( high-energy conversion electrons and the level scheme of 200 Hg ). Afterwards he was at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble . Initially he was involved in the completion of the BILL spectrometer and examined the structure of heavy nuclei in the 1970s before turning to neutron physics. With Paul Ageron and Robert Golub he investigated the generation of ultra-cold neutrons by scattering on liquid helium and was involved in the development of the first neutron microscope with Albert Steyerl and others. In the 1980s he dealt with precision measurements of properties of the neutron such as an upper limit for its charge (with R. Gähler, J. Kalus 1982), its magnetic moment and upper limits for its electrical dipole moment (which is considered an indication of a violation of the time reversal invariance if it exists), working with Norman Ramsey . In particular, he undertook precision measurements of the half-life of the neutron in beta decay , for which he and Dirk Dubbers received the Stern-Gerlach Prize of the German Physical Society in 1991 .
In 1990 he got cancer and died two years later.
