Walter Meinhold (born June 16, 1945 in Hamburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1998 to 2008 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament . He is a single parent and has two children.

education and profession

After attending elementary school, Meinhold did an apprenticeship as a wholesaler at the Hamburg wholesale market and in the Hamburg harbor from 1961 to 1964 . After military service in 1965/66 he attended evening school and studied from 1969 to 1972 for teaching at elementary and secondary schools. From 1973 until his election to the state parliament, he worked as a teacher at the Sahlkamp orientation level and since 1991 as the rector of the Garbsen secondary school .

politics

Meinhold has been a member of the SPD since 1982. From 2000 to April 2, 2011 he was chairman of the SPD city association of Hanover . He was also deputy chairman of the SPD sub-district Hannover Region until 2017 and is a member of the board of the SPD district Hannover. From 1991 to 1998 he was councilor in Hanover and from 1998 to 2008 a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament. In the state elections in 2008 he did not run again for reasons of age. In 2008 he was elected chairman of the newly founded SPD state party council of Lower Saxony with 91.3% of the vote. On May 13, 2017 he was elected honorary chairman of the SPD Hanover.

Other offices

Meinhold has been a member of the GEW since 1970 and a member of the German Tenants' Association since 1972 . In addition, he is chairman of the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Hannover AG and of the advisory board of the Lower Saxony hardship fund for victims of Nazi persecution in particular emergencies . He is also a member of the advisory board of Thüga AG Munich.

In February 2016 Meinhold suffered a stroke as a result of which he had to undergo emergency surgery and his left arm and leg were paralyzed. He was only released from a rehabilitation clinic five months after the stroke.
