Walter Mettmann

Walter Mettmann (born September 25, 1926 in Cologne ; † July 12, 2011 in Münster / Westphalia) was a German Romanist , Hispanic , Lusitanist and Medievalist .

life and work

Mettmann studied Romance languages ​​and Arabic at the University of Cologne . He received his doctorate there in 1953 under Fritz Schalk with the thesis Studies on the Religious Theater Tirso de Molinas (Cologne 1954) and was full professor for Romance Philology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1962 to 1991 .

Mettmann was co-editor of the journal Ibero-American Archives. Journal of the Ibero-American Research Institute at the University of Bonn . From 1974 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and from 1982 a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .
