Walter Odington
Walter Odington (* around 1260 possibly in Oddington , Gloucestershire or Oddington , Oxfordshire ; † after 1346 (?)) Was an English monk , mathematician and music theorist .
Life and meaning
Odington lived as a Benedictine monk in Evesham and Oxford . In addition to two astronomical treatises, he wrote De speculatione musices .
In his music treatise, Odington was one of the first to give the frequency ratio of the pure third as 5: 4 and called it concordes discordie . In the tradition of the Pythagorean consonance theory, he explains the ditone with the proportion 81:64 as dissonant and mentions that most of the people consider this interval to be consonant because of its proximity to the interval with the proportion 5: 4.
It was not until Bartolomé Ramos de Pareja that the pure third with the proportion 5: 4 took the place of the ditone with the proportion 81:64 for the first time.
