Walter Simon (sinologist)

Ernst Julius Walter Simon (born June 10, 1893 in Berlin , † February 22, 1981 in London ) was a German sinologist . He taught at various universities, his main field of activity, besides Sinology, was Tibetology .

Life

Walter Simon studied Romance and Classical languages at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1911 to 1914. In 1922 he took a librarian's exam and received his doctorate with a dissertation on the Jewish-Spanish dialect of Saloniki . He was employed as a lecturer at the University of Berlin and was dismissed as a Jew in 1937.

In 1937 he emigrated to London . After several visiting professorships at various universities, he taught Sinology at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London from 1947 to 1960 . Simon was a member of the British Academy . In 1961 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (Commander).
