Walter Stewart, 1st Lord Blantyre (* before 1565; † March 8, 1617 ) was a Scottish nobleman and politician .

He was the son of Sir John Stewart of Minto from his second marriage to Margaret Stewart, daughter of James Stewart, 3rd Laird of Cardonald. His father's possessions around Minto in Roxburghshire fell to his older half-brother Sir Matthew Stewart († 1606) when he died in 1583, but Walter inherited the Cardonald estate near Glasgow from his mother .

In 1580 he had the office of gentleman of the bedchamber for King James VI. inside. The king enfeoffed him with the priory of Blantyre . In 1582 he received the office of Lord Privy Seal of Scotland and was included in the Scottish Privy Council . From 1593 to 1599 he was Extraordinary Lord of Session lay judge at the Court of Session . In 1596 he became High Treasurer of Scotland . In April 1599 he was stripped of all public offices in a court intrigue and imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle , but soon released.

In 1604 he was the royal commissioner for the implementation of the personal union with England . In 1606 the king made him Knight Bachelor and on July 10, 1606 he was named Lord Blantyre . From 1610 to 1617 he was again Extraordinary Lord of Session .

From his marriage in 1581 to Nichola Somerville, daughter of Sir James Somerville of Cambusnethan, he had five children:

Since his eldest son James had been killed in a duel in 1609, his second son William inherited him as 2nd Lord Blantyre in 1617.
