Walter Supersaxo (actually Walter auf der Flüe ; * around 1402 in Ernen ; † July 7, 1482 in Sion ) was a Valais prince-bishop of the diocese of Sion , who played an important role in the history of Valais .

Life

Walter Supersaxo was the son of Nikolaus uf der Flüe († before December 19, 1453) from Ernen and his wife Antonia. He was the father of Walter, Katharina and Jörg uf der Flüe († 1529), from whom an influential Sion bourgeois family descended.

In 1436 he became vicar of the cathedral in Sion and a year later he was secretary to Bishop Wilhelm III. by Raron. From 1441 to 1457 he was a notary and pastor in Ernen, and in 1443 he also became Canon of Sitten.

On December 20, 1457, Walter Supersaxo was elected to succeed Heinrich Esperlin as Bishop of Sion and on March 4, 1459 he was appointed to the office by Bishop Giacomo Filippo Crivelli in Novara . During his time as bishop and Count of Wallis to 1482 he was able to significantly strengthen the position of the diocese by about the foreign policy act of Zehnden circumcised and issued new synodal statutes and regulations other than a kind of state constitution. The will of Bishop Walter Supersaxo dated June 29, 1482 is a source on his relatives. On July 7th, 1482 he died in the episcopal castle Tourbillon near Sion and was buried in the Barbara chapel, which he donated in his will in the cathedral of Sion Notre-Dame du Glarian .

During the reign of Bishop Supersaxo, the construction of the cathedral in Sion began.
