Walter Thürmer (sculptor)

Walter Thürmer (born September 30, 1905 in Dresden ; † January 14, 1996 there ) was a German wood sculptor and monument conservator.

Life

Thürmer was trained as a wood sculptor and studied sculpture at the Dresden Art Academy from 1926 to 1932 . He became a master student of Georg Wrba and Karl Albiker . After the end of the Second World War , for which he was drafted as a soldier, Thürmer moved to Dresden in 1954 and from 1955 began to work in the field of monument preservation . He created additions to the pulpit of the Johanniskirche in Plauen and aroused the interest of Hans Nadler through his sensitive work , who subsequently entrusted him with further restoration and reconstruction work.

Thürmer was also involved in the discussion about the preservation of the Dresden Sophienkirche . His proposal to rebuild the church on a reduced scale was not implemented.

Thürmer's life's work was the reconstruction of the burned prospect of the Silbermann organ in the Catholic Court Church . He began with the reconstruction of the limewood prospectus at the age of 62 and worked on it well into the 80th year of life. Thürmer did not live to see the completion of the complex prospectus - it was completed by Thomas Jäger. Before his death, Thürmer almost completely reconstructed the sound cover of the court church pulpit.
