Walter Vogel (archivist)

Walter Vogel (born March 7, 1909 in Göttingen , † December 20, 2005 in Bonn ) was a German archivist .

Life

From 1928 he studied history and English at the University of Göttingen and wrote a source studies dissertation in 1932 after the Prussian skeptic originally wanted to do a doctorate on the subject of Bismarck and the Lies . In 1934 he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post, in 1935 that for the higher archival service.

Vogel initially worked as a freelancer in the "specialist department for social history " at the AWI ergonomics institute of the DAF . From 1936 to 1945 Vogel was employed in the Reichsarchiv under the direction of Ernst Zipfel , in 1940 he became archivist and worked in Heinrich Otto Meisner's department on the indexing of archive holdings. From 1943 he was involved in the outsourcing of archive holdings. He did not become a soldier because of a previous tuberculosis illness. From 1946 to 1952 he worked in the Osnabrück State Archives . In 1952 he moved to the newly founded Federal Archives , became archive director in 1966 and chief archive director in 1972. In 1974 he retired.
